Stoltenberg: NATO builds up its presence in the Black Sea

NATO has built up the presence of its forces in the Black Sea. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made such a statement at a press conference ahead of the meetings of NATO ministers of foreign affairs, which is scheduled to begin in Brussels on December 4, an Ukrinform correspondent reports. “NATO has built up its military presence in the Black Sea region. We also have greater naval presence. Last year, the number of NATO warships in the Black Sea increased from 80 to 120. We have three allies in the region - Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria - which have their own naval capabilities. NATO patrols the airspace over the Black Sea region, and we have a new multinational brigade in Romania. Now we have more surveillance and reconnaissance assets in this region,” Stoltenberg said. He noted that the Allies would continue to closely monitor the situation in the Azov region and called on Russia to release the

Moscow ready to enhance military cooperation with Athens, says Russian envoy

Moscow is looking to expand military and technical cooperation with Athens and is ready to discuss new projects, Russian Ambassador to Greece, Andrey Maslov, told Russian news agency TASS on Monday. The diplomat said Greece is armed with the Russia-made military equipment, which Moscow supplied to Athens more than 15 years ago. “At present, cooperation in this area is developing largely through the maintenance of the Russia-made weaponry that Greece already has,” he was quoted as saying. “There are no complaints about our equipment from the Greek side since it has proven itself to be good and high-quality.” “We in turn are open to stepping up cooperation in this area and are ready to discuss new projects,” he added. He also argued that the recent crisis in bilateral relations, when Athens expelled two diplomats and issued entry bans for two more, has been “overcome.” “Today, relations between

NATO Exercises Cyber Defences as Threat Grows

In a nondescript brick building on the snowy edge of Estonia's second city Tartu, soldiers in camouflage tap silently at computers. They are troops manning the 21st century's front line. With its harsh lighting and partitioned desks, the room could be any soulless office. But this is NATO's "cyber range" and these men and women are running the alliance's biggest cyber warfare exercise, an electronic defensive drill dubbed Cyber Coalition 2018. The activity is taking place just 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the border with Russia, seen by the West as the biggest cyber threat after a string of attacks blamed on the Kremlin. Targets have included world sports bodies, the US Democratic Party and the world chemical weapons watchdog in the Netherlands. NATO says such assaults are becoming more "frequent, complex, destructive and coercive", and are launched not just by state actors like Russia, China and

MI6 chief calls for new era of spying using AI and robots to combat rogue states

The head of MI6 will on Monday highlight the urgent need for a new era of spying in which artificial intelligence and robotics are deployed to combat rogue states hellbent on “perpetual confrontation” with the UK. In a rare public speech - only his second in four years in the job - Alex Younger, the Chief of MI6, will say that Britain must enter an age of “fourth generation espionage” to keep the country safe. The MI6 boss - known as "C" - will also emphasise the importance of "strengthening" Britain’s security ties with European allies ahead of Brexit, pointing out that "multiple" Islamic State-inspired attacks on the Continent have been disrupted thanks to the co-operation of intelligence agencies. The speech to students at St Andrew’s University, where Mr Younger studied, will also warn of the danger of “adversaries” who are “willing to take advantage” of huge leaps in cyber technology to launch attacks on

EU will extend Russia sanctions in December: Tusk

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - The European Union will extend its existing economic sanctions on Russia next month, a top official with the bloc said on Friday after Moscow’s action against Ukraine’s navy in the Sea of Azov. European Council President Donald Tusk will chair a summit of EU leaders on Dec. 13-14, which is due to roll over for another year the bloc’s measures against Russia’s defense, energy and banking sectors, punishment for Moscow’s role in the turmoil in Ukraine. “Europe is united in its support to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This is why I am sure that the EU will roll over the sanctions against Russia in December,” Tusk told a news conference in Argentina, where the leaders of the world’s 20 biggest economies were meeting. Tusk said Russia’s use of force against the Ukrainian navy vessels was “totally unacceptable”. Last weekend, Russian ships fired at Ukrainian ones on the Sea of
